The name Jehovah
appears to be composed of the future of the verb to be, plus the
preterite form of the same verb with the first letter (He) dropped by apheresis,
so that the verb to be is actually twice repeated in the name, as it is also
in Exodus 3:14. Thus the name expresses the
eternal, self-existent nature of God’s being. He is the One who was, who is,
and is to come. The whole context involved in the
revelation of this name (see Exodus 6:3-9) indicates that this is God’s name in covenant and
redemptive relation to Israel.
