7. The Scriptures encourage a thorough
and systematic study of truth. The Bereans were praised for searching the
Scriptures daily to see whether those things which they had heard were true (Acts 17:11). Christ told the Jews to search the
Scriptures (John 5:39).
Paul told us to compare spiritual things with spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:13). Paul told Timothy: “Till I come,
give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine .... Meditate upon
these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to
all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them; for in
doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee” (1 Timothy 4:13, 15, 16). Timothy was
commissioned to be a teacher as well as a preacher of the Word. A teacher of
the Word must know the doctrines of the Word.
