Thus
the teaching and illuminating work of the Holy Spirit is involved in every step
of the theological discipline: the study of language, the meaning of words, Biblical
history and geography, exegesis, and every other means of arriving at the true
meaning of Scripture, in conjunction with a humble submission to and reliance
upon the Holy Spirit for guidance and enlightenment. And the supreme end of
this endeavor must be to glorify God and not simply to attain knowledge, which
in and of itself serves only to “puff up” (1
Corinthians 8:1).
