5. They have mouths, but they speak not. The idols cannot utter even the faintest sound; they cannot communicate with their worshipers; they can neither promise nor threaten, command nor console, explain the past nor prophesy the future. Eyes have they, but they see not. They cannot tell who their worshipers may be or what they offer. He must be very blind who worships a blind god; we pity a blind man; it is strange to worship a blind image.
