Simply stated,
the first law of thermodynamics states that it is impossible to create energy,
and the second law states that it is impossible for heat energy to flow
spontaneously from a cooler body to a warmer body. If a pan of water is found
to be warmer than the surrounding air it is a foregone conclusion that the water
must have been heated by some source which was hotter than the air. It is also
evident that if no further heat energy is applied to the water, the water will
in time give up its heat to the air until both water and air have the same temperature.
When this state of equilibrium is reached it is impossible for the water to
make the air warmer, or for the air to make the water warmer.
