The
Bible declares that men in the beginning knew God but did not like to retain
God in their knowledge (Rom. 1:21, 28),
and that through Jesus Christ men may come to know God in a saving way (John 17:3). We cannot conceive God, that is,
form a mental image of Him. It is doubtless for this reason that Israel was
forbidden to make any image or likeness of God (Exodus20:4). God is incomprehensible. Paul stood in awe when
confronted with God and His ways: “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom
and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and his ways past
finding out.” And yet this same apostle declares: “I know whom I have believed
and am persuaded...” (2 Timothy 1:12).
