Deism has been
called the religion of the absentee God. It holds that God created the
universe and endowed it with laws for its continued operation, and that He has
never intervened in any way with it since the beginning. Deists argued that if
God’s creation were perfect, He would not need to intervene, and that any
intervention on His part would be a sign of imperfection in His work. Thus they
rejected the entire concept of a special revelation from God, such as the
Bible, as well as any activity of God either in Preservation or Providence. Prayer
or any kind of fellowship with God would be an impossibility in this system. By
teaching that God had absented Himself from His creation, Deism became a
religion of Nature, based on the inviolability of natural law and a mechanical
view of the world. “God made the world so good at the first that the best He
can do is to let it alone!”
