Thomas Huxley
was apparently the first to use the name agnostic, applying it to
himself and to those who shared his views. According to Berkhof: “The fundamental
position (of agnosticism) is that the human mind is incapable of knowing
anything which lies beyond and behind natural phenomena, and is therefore
necessarily ignorant of supersensible and divine things.’’3 Some of the better known men who have
subscribed to this position are David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Sir William
Hamilton, Auguste Comte (founder of Positivism), John Fiske, Herbert Spencer,
Dean Mansel.
