The
purpose of the tabernacle is stated in Exodus25:8: “That I may dwell among them.” Sin involves both penalty
and defilement. In the work of salvation there is a once-for-all remission of
the penalty of sin at the time faith is placed in the Savior. In type Israel
had been brought into this position by having the blood of the Covenant sacrifice
sprinkled upon them. Sins committed after this bring defilement, so that if God
is to dwell among such people there must be cleansing. The High-priestly ministry
of Christ by virtue of His blood which has been shed is that which cleanses the
believer from sin, making possible fellowship with the Father and the Son (1 John 1:7). In type, Israel needed to be
cleansed constantly so that God might dwell among them. It was for this reason
that the tabernacle worship with its priesthood was established. In the type,
numerous and repeated sacrifices were necessary (Hebrews 10:11), but in the Antitype the once-for-all sacrifice was of
infinite value so that it covered all of the various aspects of the Levitical
offerings. Unless the above truth is recognized it will appear that Israel under
the Law Covenant was obtaining salvation by the works of the law and not by the
hearing of faith.
