These
words serve to show the absolutely unconditional character of this covenant,
which, if it means anything at all, it means that God’s oath will someday be
carried out in the literal establishment of David’s throne and kingdom. That
the fulfillment in a spiritual sense is meant and has already occurred, as is
claimed by Amillennialists, is clearly contradicted by Acts 15:16, where some twenty years after the death and resurrection
of Christ it is clearly stated that David’s tabernacle is fallen down and is in
ruins. James makes it abundantly clear that the setting up of David’s throne
and house will come only after the return of Christ.
