3. SCIENCE:
By
science is meant, not only that knowledge which has come through the various
science disciplines, but all knowledge which we individually gain through
personal experiences. Tradition may be thought of as second-hand knowledge;
experience as first-hand knowledge. A student may learn from his text-book that
water is composed of two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen. This is accurate
knowledge, although second-hand. But when he goes into the laboratory and
decomposes water by electrolysis and measures and identifies the resultant
gases this knowledge becomes first-hand and personal. Such knowledge carries
with it the strongest assurance of truth.
