While every
word of Scripture is God-breathed, not every word is direct revelation. The
Bible contains revelation. It does not contain the word of God: it is the word
of God. There are many historical details in the Bible for which there was no
need of direct revelation. Chafer states:
While these two divine operations do often concur, it is equally true
that they often function separately. By revelation of the purest character Joseph
was warned of God in a dream that he should flee into Egypt with Mary and the
infant Jesus. It is not asserted, however, that he was inspired to record the
revelation for the benefit of others.
