The
work of the Spirit in this passage is not that of regenerating or saving the sinner,
but of illuminating the sinner in regard to three things which are essential to
the subsequent work of regeneration. Although the law may have done its work of
showing the sinner the sinfulness of his sins, and although he may be sorry for
them, the Spirit in this work is concerned with only one sin: sin because they
believe not on Christ. The Spirit next convicts of righteousness, not the sinner’s,
for he has none; but the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ
unto all and upon all that believe (Romans 3:22).
