The
Documentary Theory was finalized by Graff, Kuenen, and Wellhausen. The J and E
documents, they claimed, were composed during the early monarchy and were later
combined by a redactor. The bulk of Deuteronomy (D) was composed in the 7th
century and published in the 18th year of the reign of Josiah (2 Kings 22). Later it was combined with J and E
by another redactor. The Priestly Code (PC), consisting mainly of Leviticus
17-26, is said to have been composed in the post-exilic period. It was finally
joined with the JED documents by a priestly redactor (Rp) to form the
Pentateuch, which was brought by Ezra to Jerusalem from Babylon in 458 B.C. (Ezra 7:6-10).
